One of the most important pieces of gear you can buy is a water filtration system. There are many types, many sizes, and all vary in what they can do. One of the variables in these filters is the lifespan. There are other options for making safe potable water, such as boiling, iodine tabs, bleach, etc. You can go many days without food, but your survival rate without clean water is zero. I have posted other water filtration systems, Chris posted about a DIY water filtration system, but I like options, and this is just another option. The Sawyer Water filtration system was brought to my attention by a member of our forum. I have looked into this piece of gear, and I think it is amazing. There are a few types of Sawyer water filters so I am going to share some with you. Life of the filter is a huge factor, and this Sawyer filter claims 1 MILLION GALLON LIFETIME.
I like this system because it is compact, can fit into your pack with ease, and comes with the squeeze bag. you fill the bag, attach the filter, and squeeze the water out. Also comes with a bucket adapter to filter large quantities of water. The buckets must be food grade material, and I mentioned in an earlier post where to get those… grocery store bakeries. The other thing I like about this is it not only attaches to the squeeze pouch, but is the same thread size as a 2 liter bottle. Here is a quick video to show how it works.
Great for emergency preparedness kits, The Sawyer All-In-One Filter gives you the ability to use the Sawyer PointONE 0.10 Absolute Micron Water Filter attached to a collapsible squeeze pouch, attached to a standard 5 gallon bucket (not included), or attached to your home faucet. The “build your own gravity system” can yield up to 540 gallons of clean water per day from any fresh water source.
This emergency water purification system is essential to emergency preparedness kits for use during disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Simply install the compatible purifier to the 1-liter light-weight durable pouch or a plastic bucket of your choice (not included) and you’re setup with a large-volume gravity purification system that can be used to filter hundreds of gallons per day. Use the included faucet adaptor to drink straight from the tap during boil alerts or in other emergencies when safe drinking water is compromised. This is a great choice for relief agencies or support groups travelling to areas where the water source is compromised or in question. Chemicals and electricity are not required.

For a lightweight and fast solution to clean water for the outdoor enthusiast or traveler on the go, choose the Sawyer Water Filtration bottle. Simply fill up the water bottle with unfiltered water from a lake or stream, screw the cap on, and drink instantly. This water filtration bottle allows you to incorporate ice and or a powdered drink mix into the bottle without affecting the filtration capabilities of the filter. The included cap fits a standard 63-mm threaded bottle making it adaptable to other water bottles. When the filter starts to slow down, simply back wash it using the provided faucet adapter. A great solution for days out boating or day hiking, carrying in a back pack or canoe, in your ski pack. This is a great alternative when you can’t carry all the potable water you need in the field when hiking, hunting or adventure travelling internationally. Included is a 0.1 micron absolute Sawyer PointOne hollow fiber membrane, 1-liter durable bottle with cap, 2 replacement drinking straws, and a cleaning syringe. You can also find a clear bottle variation of this at Wal-Mart for about the same price. Click here to view at Walmart
Use the Sawyer lightweight 3-way inline filter water treatment system to filter water directly from a river, lake or stream along the trail or from other non potable sources. Works great as a hydration pack reservoir filter for long hikes where the water source is in question. You can even just attach it to a household faucet filter. For Hydration packs, insert the filter inline with the drinking tube, then simply fill your reservoir with unfiltered water and drink away. As long as the filter is inline on your hydration pack you don’t need to worry about cleaning the reservoir. You can also attach a drink tube of your choice (sold separately) to the filter, then submerge the filter into dirty water and drink directly from the source. This is a great alternative to carrying potable water long distances or while out canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, or travelling abroad. Filter cartridge is 1.75 inches x 3.5 inches.
